A 29-year-old Mexico man was rescued from his apartment during a fire that caused significant damage Sunday evening.
The man was transported by Audrain Ambulance District to University Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, and officials determined the cause of the fire was smoking inside the apartment, according to a news release issued by the Mexico Public Safety Department.
At approximately 5:59 p.m., MPSD responded to an apartment fire with someone trapped inside in the 1200 block of West Breckenridge.
Responding officers found fire coming from a second-story bedroom. The resident, a man with impaired vision, was in the bedroom across the hall. Officers removed the resident from the apartment using a ladder, while additional officers contained the fire.
The fire was extinguished and the bedroom sustained significant fire damage. The rest of the apartment sustained significant heat, smoke and water damage.
