Mexico Public Safety Department responded to two fire calls over the weekend. No injuries occurred from either fire.
On Saturday, just after 3:15 p.m., MPSD personnel responded to the 1600 block of South Western regarding a grass fire. Responding personnel found that a fire was burning in adjoining backyards of three houses, according to a MPSD news release, with the fire possibly started while some of the residents were outside working. The fire damaged some privacy fencing along the property lines, a swimming pool and some honey bee brood boxes, the release stated.
On Sunday, just before noon, MPSD personnel responded to the 1600 block of Omar Street in reference to a power line that had come down. Responding personnel found that a higher voltage power line had come down in a yard, apparently after a squirrel had damaged a ceramic insulator.
MPSD personnel kept people from the arcing line and extinguished small fires involving a privacy fence, a bush, and the utility pole itself. Ameren personnel arrived at approximately shortly before 1 p.m., shut down power to the line and took over the scene for repair work.
