Missouri State Society Daughters of American Revolution (MSSDAR) Chapters have coordinated with other service organizations to host the inaugural "Poker Walk" at the Mexico Veterans Home for 50 veterans.
According to a news release, MSSDAR Service to Veterans Chair Rosalie McGaugh spearheaded this venture and contacted Missouri DAR, American Legion and VFW chapters. The event was a success, organizers said, and it was rewarding to meet these veterans and spend the morning with them.
Service organizations participating were:
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 5
Jane Randolph Jefferson Chapter, NSDAR
Mexico-Missouri Chapter, NSDAR
Valley of the Meramec Chapter, NSDAR
VFW 2482 - St. Clair
VFW 3772 - Mexico
VFW-Auxiliary - Washington
Unit 5 was the “kickoff" table where veterans were provided with “messenger bags” along with items to go in them including hot sauce packets, Slim Jims, potato chips, snack mix, crackers, note pads, pens and health care products.
Each veteran pulled a card from the deck at the table, it was logged, put back in the stack then the veteran moved to the next of seven tables to pull a card and add fun items to their bag; they were able to choose from notebooks, snack items, cards of thanks and sweet treats. Each veteran was a winner.
At the last table, veterans were able to pull a poppy from a bouquet, which had money attached to the bamboo skewer stem.
McGaugh has worked with the six other Missouri Veterans Homes and plans to host more Poker Walks in the future. The American Legion and VFW chapters have been invited to join the fun.
