North Callaway girls lose 58-36 after state-ranked Montgomery County heats up
The first half had the North Callaway girls had state-ranked Montgomery County where they wanted them on Tuesday.
The third quarter changed that feeling considerably as the Eastern Missouri Conference and district Lady Wildcats outscored North Callaway 25-11 in the quarter to hand the Ladybirds a 58-36 loss at home. North Callaway (6-3, 3-1 EMO) only trailed 19-17 at halftime.
“In the second half, they just got hot,” head coach Andrew Klein said. “We had a hand in their face on shots.”
Olivia Shaw led Class 3 No. 4 Montgomery (9-0, 3-0 EMO) with 16 points but scored nine of her points in the third quarter, and Malia Rodgers followed with 12 points. Riley Blevins was the lone Ladybird in double figures with 14 points to go along with three steals.
Thunderbirds buried by first quarter in 69-51 loss to Montgomery County
If that first quarter just didn’t happen on Tuesday.
That’s what the North Callaway boys were thinking after a 69-51 loss at home to Eastern Missouri Conference and district foe Montgomery County, who received votes in the first Class 3 state poll. The Thunderbirds were outscored 22-6 in the first quarter but then were only outscored 47-45 through the other three quarters.
Head coach Matt Miller said he liked how North Callaway (3-5, 2-2 EMO) played with the Wildcats (8-3, 4-0 EMO) for three quarters but couldn’t quite make up the deficit created by the first quarter, drawing as close as six points once in the third quarter.
Clayton Parker led Montgomery with 23 points and was a tough matchup on the boards, Tyler Erwin followed with 16 points and Jacob Stellwagen had 14 points. North Callaway also had three double-digit scorers in Sam Pezold with 14 points, and Isiah Craighead and Paul Russell each with 12 points. Russell was the Thunderbirds’ leading rebounder with four boards.
