The North Callaway girls are concerned about results beyond the record in the summer.
The Ladybirds might not have won every set of the Hallsville team camp last week, but they are preparing for the season by playing competitive sets. North Callaway did beat New Bloomfield and Christian Fellowship two weeks in Hallsville and then split sets with Centralia and lost both sets to Mexico last week.
Head coach Andrew Klein said he is unconcerned with wins and losses during summer. He is watching how North Callaway plays in those sets.
“Last night and today have been competitive and really good sets,” Klein said. “Those are the games we need to play in. I’m not worried about record right now, but it’s more seeing live volleyball because not all of our girls play club.”
Klein added club volleyball — which has 10 Ladybirds playing — has been finished for one or two months, so seeing everyone gain more experience is valuable. Everyone has been the key word as Klein has loved the turnout this summer.
“The last two nights for our varsity, we have all 12 girls that I plan on keeping on varsity,” Klein said. “Our rosters aren’t set right now, but the buy-in to come to these things is important, especially when you have 12 capable players and eight seniors.”
North Callaway will have much return from a year ago with eight seniors. However, Klein said the buy-in is a main thing he wanted to see this summer so North Callaway has a better chance of peaking in October.
The buy-in doesn’t just include the volleyball court. Klein said the North Callaway weight room has been more crowded with softball players and cheerleaders in there with his volleyball players. The Ladybirds also worked on their skills in a clinic hosted by a college coach Elise Hardesty.
“We’ve revamped the weight room at North Callaway,” Klein said. “A lot of the days, we are getting more than 30 girls, and I’m not just talking about volleyball athletes. I’m making sure that they take care of what they can even outside of volleyball — conditioning-wise, strengthening their legs and improving their goals.”
North Callaway varsity plays July 20-21 in Jefferson City for the Licking team camps.
