Organization to recognize local tutors for their work and provide additional education

On Thursday, April 20, St. Louis Oasis, a branch of the nonprofit educational organization, The Oasis Institute, will host an event to recognize and provide professional development to their older adult volunteers who serve in school districts across Illinois and Missouri. The "Essential Pieces: Changing the World One Child at a Time" event will be held at the Elk Park Event Center in Columbia. The event falls during National Volunteer Week, April 16–22.

As recognition of their service, Oasis is offering two sessions of continuing education that will help tutors to better understand the students they work with and the challenges those students face. The first presenter is Darbie Valenti Huff, 2017 Missouri Teacher of the Year. Huff will present "Two Birds, One Stone: Balancing Academics with Social-Emotional Needs." Tutors will learn skills to help them guide students to embrace mistakes, reaching deeper levels of learning while developing tenacity.

The second speaker is Laura Naas, a retired elementary classroom and Title I Reading teacher. Laura has served as a member of the Missouri Legislative Task Force for Dyslexia and is a member of the advocacy group Decoding Dyslexia-Missouri. Naas will present a session entitled "Dyslexia for a Day."

“Oasis is proud to honor these dedicated individuals whose service enriches the lives of children daily,” said Stephanie McCreary, national tutoring director at Oasis. “This event is just one of the many resources we provide our tutors to enrich the important work they do in our local communities.”

A recent National Association of Area Agencies on Aging publication found that “doing good is good for you,” noting that people who volunteer for as little as two hours a week showed improved cognition and emotional and physical health and may even live longer. The need for volunteers in local schools has never been greater. If you are interested in volunteering with Oasis, please visit https://tutoring.oasisnet.org/ to learn more.

This event is made possible by the Corporation for National and Community Service funding.
