Paris made history on Friday night.
It didn’t end with a victory for the Coyotes, but they played their first ever 8-man football game in school history. Paris lost 38-18 at Southwest (Livingston County) with Hale, Tina-Avalon as it just couldn’t prevent its opponent from eating clock in the second half.
Cody Carney, who is in his first year as Paris’ head coach following years of coaching in the sport’s variation, said 8-man football emphasizes speed more than 11-man. That doesn’t mean bigger players aren’t helpful.
“Southwest has a lot of size,” Carney said. “They were really able to pound the ball and play keepaway.”
Paris allowed 377 yards of offense by Southwest as the Wildcats had four touchdowns split between two 100-yard rushers in Will Hughes and Tucker Singer, 104 yards on 14 carries and 118 yards on 16 carries, respectively.
Southwest only led 6-0 after one quarter but then took a 28-12 halftime advantage before tacking on 10 more points in the fourth quarter. Carney said four Paris turnovers helped Southwest in winning the time of possession battle.
Gatlin Fountain had a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown from Luke Ensor for the Coyotes, and Brandon Callison also ran for a touchdown. Paris amassed 178 yards on offense. Fountain led the offense with 60 yards on 10 carries and was also the star on defense with 12 tackles. Colton Kendrick finished 6-for-13 with 77 yards passing.
Following Fountain on defense was Reid Ragsdale with nine tackles, and Kendrick, Aron McCain and Payden Crain each with seven tackles.
“They adjusted pretty well (to 8-man),” Carney said. “We had a lot of mental mistakes tonight. It’s part of being in a new system.”
