Paris solely runs to 58-12 win at Northland Christian

After recording many miles on a three-hour trip to Northland Christian in Kansas City, Paris piled up the yardage during the game.

The Coyotes didn’t need to pass the ball – one attempt for an incompletion – as they ran for 457 yards on 30 carries to defeat Northland Christian 58-12. Three Coyotes finished with more than 100 yards rushing, led by Payden Crain’s 115 yards and three touchdowns on four carries.

“It seemed like every time he touched it, he’d find a seam and once he got going north-and-south, they couldn’t touch him,” head coach Cody Carney said.

Carney said several of his players were able to find room on the ground as quarterback Colton Kendrick had 101 yards and two touchdowns on six carries, Aron McCain ran for 104 yards and one touchdown on seven carries and Gatlin Fountain finished with 63 yards on six carries. Paris was simply taking what Northland Christian (1-3) was giving.

“They were playing off and taking away the pass,” Carney said. “They were giving us the run game, especially the outside, and took advantage. We ran a lot of misdirection tonight and threw them off.”

Brandon Callison and Logan Mitchell also ran for touchdowns to add to Paris’ season-high total, which was preceded by a 30-12 lead at halftime and 52-12 advantage after the third quarter. Carney said Paris (2-2) made sure to keep the momentum before halftime.

“We had a big goal line stand before half with less than a minute,” Carney said. “We fumbled on the first play, gave it right back to them, and right before the half, they had another goal line stand. That was a pretty big momentum-builder.”

Defensively, Fountain was the star with 21 tackles, Crain followed with 12 tackles, Chase Kendrick had 11 tackles and McCain finished with 10 tackles. Brady Shivers made an interception, and Crain also recovered a fumble. The Coyotes allowed 104 rushing yards out of 240 total yards by Northland Christian.

Paris plays at Schuyler County (3-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Lady Coyotes win North Shelby title

The weather robbed Paris softball of the opportunity of a championship game on Saturday, but the Lady Coyotes still came away the champions.

Paris won the North Shelby Tournament, despite not playing a title game against Mark Twain due to lightning, after defeating Bevier 11-1 in five innings and Van-Far 15-0 in three innings.

Against Bevier, Paris (5-6) recorded 13 hits and six extra-base hits to seal an early victory as Kennedy Ashenfelter was 2-for-3 with two RBI, a triple and a double, Reese Sutton was 3-for-3 with a triple and a RBI, Knightlee Mittten went 3-for-3 with a RBI triple, and Sophia Crusha was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Sutton pitched five innings with five strikeouts, two walks, one hit and one run.

Paris still reached 13 hits against Van-Far in the three innings played. Alyssa Webb led the offense by going 3-for-3 with three RBI, Crusha finished with a three-RBI triple, Ashenfelter was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a double, and Mitten had two RBI. Ashenfelter pitched three innings with five hits and three strikeouts.

Paris (1-1 L&C) lost 19-0 to Lewis and Clark Conference foe Marceline on Monday and went to conference foe Scotland County on Tuesday. The Lady Coyotes then host conference foe Schuyler County (3-9, 1-3 L&C) at 5 p.m. Thursday before playing in the first round of their home tournament on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against North Shelby (4-3-2).

In the girls 5,000 meters, Kinnaman finished fifth with a time of 22:08.91, and Chapman was sixth in the boys race with a school-record time of 17:40.50.

Kaylee Johnson was 16th in the girls race with a time of 24:15.14 to be the third and final Paris medalist. David Elzea had the next best boys finish in 37th place.
