Mexico was playing for much on Thursday and got a reward at the end.
The Lady Bulldogs were playing for others with their Pink Out Night and Teacher Appreciation Night at Gallop Field and were playing for themselves in the last game before districts next week. Their 9-2 win over rival Fulton (2-20) improved their record to 20-8 for their first 20-win season since 2018. Keerstan Ewing pitched seven innings with six hits, three strikeouts and one earned run, and Mexico got two-RBI hits by Scottie Smith, Payton Sells and Chloe Landrum. Smith finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Aleigha Henderson went 2-for-2 with two walks.
"I'm very proud of the girls because they definitely put in the work to get to this point, especially our seniors," head coach Hanna Jones said about the 20-win accomplishment. "The seniors have been good leaders for our team. I feel like a lot of the work and extra reps and everything has led up to this point. It's cool to see their hard work is paying off."
Mexico snaps another streak when the Class 3 District 4 tournament begins on Oct. 15. It will be the first softball district tournament hosted by Mexico since 2014. The Lady Bulldogs are the No. 3 seed and play No. 6 seed Macon (11-16) at 4 p.m. Oct. 15 in a rematch from an 8-2 Mexico win from earlier this season.
