Not much is returning from Mexico girls tennis varsity.
However, there are plenty of girls out for tennis this season, and they are excited for the opportunity to learn.
Head coach Kim Costley expects junior Jackie Lucas to be the only returning varsity player. There will be five returners and 10 who have never played tennis. Out of the 15 total girls, eight of them will be upperclassmen.
“I'm glad to have so many new girls out,” Costley said. “Now, we have a lot of work to do. We don't have many seniors so that will help many have time to learn and develop their skills.”
Mexico graduated six of its seven top players, but it has some promise going into this year’s varsity lineup. Sophomore Abbey Christianson will be one of the five new varsity players.
“Abbey Christianson just missed varsity last year as a freshman,” Costley said. “She has been working and her and Jackie have been leading this young team.”
The Lady Bulldogs will get to play on the new courts at the high school, which debuted during the Bulldogs’ season in the spring.
“These girls are focused and determined and it's rewarding for them to see improvement every day,” Costley said.
