Public school retirees group hears about legislatures happenings at spring meeting

Posted

The Audrain County Area Public School Retirees met in April at the Audrain County Shelter Resource Coalition building to hear about a number of topics and to discuss group business.

A devotional handout was shared by Linda Sue Gallaway titled “Unreasonable Seasonables,” a poem that was found first in Capper’s Weekly.

John Matthews and Ra’Vae Moore spoke to the group on Audrain County Shelter Resource Coalition’s role in the Audrain County area throughout the winter months and beyond to help those who have found themselves homeless. That group’s board meets monthly and the group did express a need for volunteers.

In business at the meeting, the secretary’s report from the February meeting that had been e-mailed to members was approved as written. The treasurer's report was also approved. The corresponding secretary report by Sue Ann Keith announced that Joan Fecht was named as a hidden hero for cleaning the streets in Mexico.

Cheri Erdel and Barb Parker touched on legislative activities and the call to action available for members to use.

In the Informative Protective component of the meeting, Lou Mongler gave some tips to help keep people safe from scammers, which included restarting their phones regularly, and grasping and wiggling ATMs before you insert your card to test for a skimmer.

Sally Stuart, for Community Service, reminded all to keep up collecting Moser’s receipts and doing the book sales to boost the teacher scholarship. She also mentioned the middle school had expressed gratitude for the organization support of the food pantry.

In the Membership partof the meeting, all were asked to report the names of any upcoming retirees from any Audrain County school.

In old business, cookies were distributed to Audrain County schools again this year with more than plenty to go around, so some were shared at the CT School, and were much appreciated. The group thanked Janice Douglas and Maureen Hacker for delivering them. MRTF Raffled Tickets will be mailed to members to sell, and the proceeds will be used to fund the organization’s grants in the region.

The Leadership Summit was held March 19 and 20 at Stoney Creed Inn. Maureen Hacker, Janice Douglas and Deborah Teague attended. The MU Golden Girls were also there.

The floor was asked for nominations for this year’s Distinguished Retiree from the organization’s unit. The deadline is June 30. Maureen Hacker was nominated with a robust “Aye.”

Upcoming Events:

Golf Tournament: June 18 at Eagle Knoll: Silent Auction — donations and golfers welcome.

ACAPSR will host its Region 4 meeting Oct. 27 in Audrain County.

The meeting was adjourned and the blessing for the meal was given by Barb Green.

A light lunch was enjoyed by all, provided by Lou Mongler, Connie Bousquet, Barb Burson, Linda Sue Galloway, Barbara Parker, Barb Green, Darlene Shopher, Laura Worstell, Jan Heaton, Nancy Baker and Mary Borman.
