Ceremonies honoring veterans were held Sept. 16 at the Friendship Baptist Church in Mexico, according to a news release.
The Friends and Family Veterans Support Group presented two Quilts of Valor to the following veterans: Raymond Fricke, who served in the Army from 1969 to 1970, and Don Uhey, who served in the Army from 1969 to 1970. Both recipients took a moment to speak and to thank the group for their quilt and express how much it meant to them. Bob Yeager opened the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer was led by Evelyn Williams. Yeager gave an overview of the Friends and Family of Veterans Support Group and Quilts of Valor program. The group does this because they love making quilts and love who they give them to.
Friends and Family of Veterans Support Group sell flowers in the spring and fall to raise funds to make the quilts. They also have support from many quilting shops in the area. The Friends and Family of Veterans Support Group has helped with the Honor Flight and volunteered on Thursday at the Missouri Veterans Home.
Presenting the Quilts of Valor were Donna Hoffman, Bob Yeager and Diana Koshinski. Each recipient was able to have a family member join them in wrapping them in their quilt as it was presented.
After the presentation, refreshments were served and Mr. Fricke and Mr. Uhey enjoyed visiting with their friends and family members who were present, as well as the friends and family of Veterans Support Group.
The Quilts of Valor program was started in 2003 by Catherine Roberts. Her son, Nat, was deployed in Iraq and she had a dream of him wrapped in a quilt giving him hope and well-being. She then founded Quilts of Valor with the message of: “Quilts = Healing.”
Quilts of Valor has given out 421,941 quilts (and counting) to honor veterans for their service.
Quilts of Valor require standards of excellence. They must be made from quality material and quality made, and they must be quilted not tied. They must be awarded, not just passed out, and they are a thank you to the recipient for their service and sacrifice.
