Quilts of Valor presentation by Friends and Family Veterans Support Group

Posted

Friends and Family of Veterans Support Group presented a Quilt of Valor to honor retired Marine Captain Kenneth Davidson during the Celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary held at the Missouri Veterans Home of Mexico on July 1. Captain Davidson served for 26 years — enlisting when he was 17 years old. His mother had to sign a permission slip allowing him to enlist due to his young age. Captain Davidson served two tours in Vietnam and one tour in Korea. After retiring from the service in 1976, Captain Davidson worked in Kansas City in Real Estate. His departed wife, Othei, served in the Air Force.

Bob Yeager gave an overview of the Friends and Family of Veterans Support Group and Quilts of Valor program. The group does this because they love making quilts and love who they give them to. The Quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.”

Presenting the Quilts of Valor were Diana Koshinski, Bob Yeager, and Donna Yeager. When the Quilt of Valor is presented, the recipient is wrapped in the quilt by members of the Support Group. The Quilt represents love, hope and thanks to the recipients. Captain Davidson was very proud and overcome with emotion at the honor. His family was in attendance.

Friends and Family of Veterans Support Group has sold flowers in the Spring and Fall to raise funds to make the quilts. They also have support from many quilting shops in the area. The Friends and Family of Veterans Support Group has helped with the Honor Flight and volunteered on Thursday at the Veterans Home.

The Quilts of Valor program was started in 2003 by Catherine Roberts. Her son, Nat, was deployed in Iraq and she had a dream of him first alone and afraid and surrounded by demons, then she saw him wrapped in a quilt giving him hope and wellbeing. She then founded Quilts of Valor with the message of Quilts = Healing.

Quilts of Valor has given out 450,952 quilts (and counting) to honor Veterans for their service. Last Month – 2,971 quilts were presented and Year to date – 14,973 have been presented.

Quilts of Valor require standards of excellence. They must be made from quality material and quality made, must be quilted not tied, they must be awarded not just passed out and they are a thank you for the recipient for their service and sacrifice.
