A presentation of Quilts of Valor was made to thank four Veterans for their service to our country at Friendship Baptist Church on Nov 21.
Joyce Lowry, Family and Friends of Veterans Support Group, gave an overview of the requirements for the quilts to be presented. Quilts have to be a certain size, need to be machine quilted, and need to be made of high quality fabric. The quilt does not have to be red, white and blue, and a flag cannot be included in the quilt. No monetary donations are given directly to the individuals.
The four veterans honored this year were Jolene Matich, Army; Herman Paul Thompson, Navy; Larry Lochridge, Army; and Robert Yeager, Army.
Sharon Schnake, a longtime Mexico educator who passed away in Feb 2023, donated the material for the quilt that Yeager received. Prior to passing away, she wanted to be sure the material would be given to the Quilts of Valor program.
After the presentation, refreshments were served and a regular meeting was held.
