Mexico residents will pay slightly more for refuse rates in 2025-26 after council approved rates at its Feb. 10 meeting.
The new base rate of $15.65 a month for sanitation services represents about a 2.5% increase per month over the current rate of $15.26, according to information in the city agenda.
Officials said in addition to a base rate for services, a fuel cost adjustment is "made part of the monthly service cost in result to the terms of our contract with Dayne’s Waste Disposal Inc." and city staff recommended that council set the monthly base rate for sanitation services for $15.65 with a “fuel cost adjusted” rate cap of $16.82 for the twelve-month period beginning April 1, 2025, through March 31, 2026.
"It should be noted that in order for us to reach that rate cap, diesel fuel would have to hit $8.05 a gallon, so that's fairly unlikely but not impossible," Deputy City Manager Roger D. Haynes told council.
Council saw the rates of 14 other area cities, whose monthly average, $17.78, was a little more than Mexico's base rate.
Also at the meeting, council heard the 2024 audit report from Williams-Keepers LLC of Columbia and received a positive standing.
