The Audrain County Shelter Resource Coalition announced Friday that Room at the Inn, Audrain County’s only winter emergency shelter, will open its doors in December, thanks to extraordinary community generosity and two anonymous donations.
These unexpected but deeply appreciated gifts closed the funding gap that would have delayed
the shelter’s opening until after Jan. 1. ACSRC stated in the release that it deeply appreciates the support from the community that has made it possible to offer emergency shelter earlier than anticipated, ensuring individuals have a safe place to stay throughout the winter months.
“This community never fails to come together when people are in need,” Ra’Vae Moore,
executive director of ACSRC, said. “Because of the kindness of our supporters and donors who gave so generously from their hearts, Room at the Inn will now open in December. Their generosity means that individuals who would otherwise be without shelter will have a warm, safe place to stay throughout December, January, and February.”
Initially, ACSRC anticipated winter operations starting in January due to budget limitations. However, the recent donations provided sufficient funding to advance the opening. Room at the Inn will be open overnight from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.
“At this time, we are anticipating opening on Wednesday, December 10,” Moore said. “This
allows us the needed time to finish preparing the shelter and hire staff. On behalf of the ACSRC
Board of Directors and myself, I cannot thank our community enough for coming together to
meet this need. Providing shelter is our mission, and we take that mission very serious.”
Moore added that the thought of not being able to operate the shelter this winter was
heartbreaking, as the need for emergency shelter in Audrain County is real and significant.
“Room at the Inn is a much-needed asset during the winter months and it is utilized by a
significant number of individuals who are experiencing homelessness in our community,” she
said. “I expect to see an increase in our numbers this year just as we have seen increases in all of
the programs we offer.”
