Seniors lead Mexico to win vs Fulton on Senior Night

The value of Mexico’s seniors wasn’t just expressed in words but shown with actions.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated North Central Missouri Conference rival and district foe Fulton 2-0 at home on Monday during Senior Night. The victory ended a six-game losing streak and four-game skid that lasted since Mexico’s previous 4-1 win against the Lady Hornets (1-20, 0-10 NCMC).

The goals were scored by freshman Marali Herrera and sophomore Claire Hudson, who had a goal in the previous 4-1 loss to Elsberry with Silex (7-3), but head coach Sarah Olson said some seniors moving around the field helped out the team.

We moved Lexie Willer to the forward position to give us a little speed up there and she did a great job,” Olson said. “We moved Estrella Lopez to a defensive position to help us because she is a great leader and communicates with her teammates on the field. We were passing the ball well in our offensive third of the field and playing with numbers up, and ultimately, that led us to be able to score a couple goals.”

Lopez and Willer were honored in a Senior Night ceremony along with Tessa Haefling, Jocelyn Garcia and Sandra Cruz.

However, Lopez had to sit out the rest of the night due to injury. Haefling has been asked this season to change positions from goalkeeper to defender, which was occupied by Addison Paden until she sustained a season-ending knee injury. Following a 4-0 loss at Canton (1-9) on Tuesday and its 2-0 regular season finale loss on Thursday at Winfield (12-11-1), Mexico (3-21-1, 2-8 NCMC) has the No. 7 seed in the Class 2 District 3 tournament hosted at Orchard Farm as the Lady Bulldogs play at 1 p.m. today against No. 2 Orchard Farm (10-8).

“This has been a hard season with a full schedule at 25 games,” Olson said. “That has been hard on our bodies this year, and we have had a lot of injuries. My goal for our girls on (today) is just to play their hearts out and be happy with the effort we give. No matter the outcome, to be positive with one another and to give our all as a team. As long as we do that, I will be pleased.”
