Two of Mexico’s many senior student-athletes were deemed the best in 2023.
The Bill Johnson Award is given to the top male and female athlete at Mexico High School, and seniors Anthony Shivers and Lexie Willer were named the recipients at last month's senior athletic banquet.
Anthony Shivers was a multi-sport athlete during his career, playing football, basketball and track and field in 2023. Shivers plans to run track for Evangel University in Springfield.
In football, Shivers was a first-team all-conference running back and second-team all-conference defensive back and a MSHSAA and Northeast Media all-district player, rushing for a team-high 833 yards and 10 touchdowns while averaging 8.5 yards per carry and finishing with 39 tackles and one interception. During the winter, Shivers was a second-team all-conference and MSHSAA and Northeast Media all-district basketball player after averaging 6.8 points, 1.1 steals and 51 percent on 2-pointers and tallying 56 deflections. As a track athlete, Shivers finishes as a two-time all-state runner as part of two podium relay teams and is coming off qualifying for three state events this year.
Willer also was involved in various sports as she played softball, basketball and soccer. She plans on attending the University of Missouri to major in radiology.
As the team captain and point guard in basketball, she averaged 5.8 points, 2.2 steals, 2.1 assists and 75 percent on free throws to be named second team all-conference and Northeast Media all-district.
