Posted

Grant Van Horn checked several boxes on Thursday.

The Mexico senior most importantly won his first ever state championship and became Mexico's first ever state champion since his cousin, Keith Ransom, did so in 2021. Van Horn's 8-3 decision victory over reigning 175-pound champion Father Tolton's William (Frank) Hazelrigg gave tied the school record of 178 wins held by two-time state champion Terrese Aaron.

Carlos Juarez Ramirez qualified for the 106-pound state title match for the second straight year and fell short again with a 2-1 loss to Lutheran St. Charles' Caleb Dyer. Juarez Ramirez did defeat Mid-Buchanan's Colby Schreck 4-1 the previous day after previously losing to him this season and started the second day with a 19-2 technical fall over Sullivan's Ian Henderson.
