Test drive a school bus event successful

The school bus rumbled as Curtis Jackson explained the control panel to the left of the steering wheel. In the driver’s seat was what the district’s transportation department representatives had been hoping for all morning, a promising and experienced applicant for a new school bus driver.

In an effort to get Mexico excited about joining the Mexico Public School District transportation department, those with a valid driver's license and a can-do-attitude were invited to get behind the wheel of a school bus.

Jackson, former director of operations and current trainer, was there behind the driver's seat there to assuage the fear of operating such a large vehicle while educating drivers about the facets of the job.

“Right now, I am training for Mexico, Paris, and the library in Columbia,” said Jackson. “I like training.”

He got his bus license when his grandson was in middle school so he could drive him to his sporting events.

Lucky for Jackson, his first ride of the day didn’t require too much instruction. A former truck driver for Crown Linen came to the event with a Class B CDL in hand. His experience practically made him a shoo-in for the position, and Jackson, eager to see what he could do, took the applicant out of the parking lot and onto the highway.
