The Home Depot distribution facility in Mexico will close this fall, according to a July 17 letter from the company to the Missouri Department of Higher Education & Workforce Development.
The letter stated 61 employees will be affected, and they will be “permanently separated” from the company. The closure is set for Oct. 26 at the facility, located on East Liberty Street.
Sara Gorman, spokeswoman for The Home Depot, said in an email statement that the company has built “a network of more than 325 distribution centers across North America, which are located to best support fulfillment to Home Depot stores and directly to our customers,” adding that the company made the “difficult decision” to close the Mexico location at the end of October.
“Products will be stocked at other Home Depot distribution centers based on regional inventory needs,” she said.
Gorman added: “We’re focused on doing the right thing and supporting our associates with separation packages, transitional benefits and job placement support. Impacted associates have been encouraged to apply to other roles within the company.”
Dana Keller, executive director of the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce, said The Home Depot has been in its space since 2006.
“They’ve been a great community partner but they’re also really known for taking good care of their employees,” she said, adding that many of the employees were there when Home Decorators operated and then went to work for The Home Depot.
“So, I think those people are going to be a big asset to the rest of our workforce,” Keller said. “We’re sad to see them go, but I’m positive that we can absorb those 60-plus people into other great jobs. They’re absolutely qualified employees who come with good attitudes, I’m certain.”
She said a lot of the employees have been there at that building for 20-plus years. She said the chamber desires to keep local talent in the community. A job fair for The Home Depot employees will be held Oct. 2, and Mexico employers interested in participating may contact the chamber, Keller said.
