Mexico High School’s class of 2025 made their way to Hawthorne Heights where they would have their last evening of togetherness and carefree fun.
The annual Senior Sunset barbecue, held May 13, was inspired by project graduation, which Rebecca Moppin, college, workforce development, community outreach and scholarship coordinator, said has not had a great turnout in the past.
“It started with the senior sunrise at the front of the year, and we thought we could have one at the end of the year and call it a sunset,” she said.
One hundred twenty students picked up their free ticket to join in the evening's festivities at school. Their ticket included dinner and entry into yet another raffle.
Brad Walker and Tad Dobbins were on the grill making hamburgers, while a handful of volunteers were in and out of the booster club trailer making plates and serving students.
“It’s a time for them to be together as they celebrate their last days,” said Moppin.
Spread around the field were different games including cornhole, soccer, giant Jenga, spikeball and more.
“The National Guard brought out their obstacle course,” said Moppin. “We’re going to have some tournaments in a little bit, so it will be fun.”
Moppin said it was a gorgeous night as the sun began to set on the field where, just three days later, the class of 2025 would receive their diplomas.
