Thunderbirds strike twice with district championships

Posted

North Callaway baseball is the district champion once again.

The Thunderbirds (20-5) became the first team in program history to win back-to-back district titles on Wednesday when they defeated South Callaway 7-6. They were down 5-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning and then scored six runs in that very inning that saw five walks and 12 batters come to the plate. Carson Bassett hit a two-RBI double, Chance Green hit a RBI single and then Coltyn O'Neal hit a two-RBI single up the middle for North Callaway's first lead. Caleb Sheets drew a walk for another run.

The North Callaway Thunderbirds celebrate after winning the Class 3 District 7 championship against South Callaway on Wednesday at South Callaway in Mokane. It is the first time the baseball program has won back-to-back district titles.

Carter Moore hit a game-tying home run in the first inning. South Callaway (16-13) scored three leadoff walks and two unearned runs off Keaton Bell (five innings, six hits, five walks, three earned runs and two strikeouts) and then one earned run off Tucker Sheets (two innings and one hit) but couldn't prevent North Callaway from having its first 20-win season since 2012.

North Callaway hosts the Class 3 District 8 winner, which will be either Fatima (15-13) or Belle (12-11), at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
