The arrival of a Scooter's drive through coffee shop was met with much anticipation. The coming of fall, the onset of winter, dreary nights and fallen leaves don't bring the same level of joy.

Yet at the new Scooter's location in Mexico, the signs of the season to come are plenty. Instead of casting a sense of doom, however, they offer a reminder that the flavors of fall and winter are warm and cozy.

Think of pumpkin spiced lattes, maple and vanilla, hot chocolate and mounds of whipped cream. These are comforting notions -- reminders of the colors of fall and the allure of the fireplace.

But the folks at Scooter's are also mindful of the late summer swelter. So they prepare a line of iced drinks.

The maple spice cold brew with cream is new to the menu. Contrary to expectations, the combination is not rich and heavy. The cream is more like a caress on the palate and the coffee fruity and delicate, with just a trace of bittersweet minerality and a fulfilling toffee finish.

If the maple shows its presence it is in a burnished complement to the cream and an earthy smile.

The cold brew process produces coffee that can be more friendly and nuanced. It mellows out the bitter streak in some beans and roasts.

This is a light and refreshing cold brew that is easy to drink and, best of all, reminds you that many weeks of pleasant weather remain before the traditional pumpkin spice latte season begins.
