Soon, children and families will get a special chance to see and meet Daniel Tiger in person in Mexico. The Mexico-Audrain County Library District will host “Be My Neighbor Day,” on March 28 at the Mexico Area Family YMCA from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to a news release.
At this free event, children can:
This event is sponsored in part by the local Friends of the Mexico-Audrain County Public Library group.
“We are excited that Daniel Tiger from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood is coming all the way from Pennsylvania to Mexico, Missouri for “Be My Neighbor Day,” Dr. Bronwyn MacFarlane, President of the Mexico-Audrain Friends of the Library, said.
Families are encouraged to bring little ones and join the fun for a joyful day and “tiger-tastic time.” Daniel Tiger’s visit this spring will help build enthusiasm for reading in advance of the library 2026 Summer Reading Program, and the theme is “Unearth a Story,” which will include dinosaurs, archaeology, and paleontology.
“Daniel Tiger encourages learning, creativity, and imagination among children,” MacFarlane said “Children across the north-central area will have the opportunity to meet one of their favorite PBS show characters right here, in our own hometown, and be excited for reading in advance of the library summer reading program.”
The event is described on the KMOS-PBS station webpage as “a day of fun family activities and meeting community helpers.”
Mister Rogers famously described his mother’s wisdom to look for the helpers as those who
take care of each other in community neighborhoods. Local neighbors may provide information directly to families about what they offer, with fun table activities.
Along with the Mexico-Audrain County Library, event partners include the Mexico-Area Family YMCA, Mexico Parks and Recreation, Central Missouri Community Action, Audrain County Health Department and Audrain County Emergency Management. Event partners continue to be invited.
Local organizations, businesses, churches, groups, etc., that would like to have an information and activity table supporting children’s education may contact Mare Prosso, assistant director and head of programming at the library.
