Salty Heifers Co. establishes nonprofit to help those in need reach their goals

For the Salty Heifers Co., the goal has always been to give back.

That’s why co-owners Barb Jones, Jacie Jones and Lindsy Swaim started the Helpful Heifers Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that will provide items to teachers, civic organizations, youth groups and similar organizations in central Missouri.

The Helpful Heifers Foundation’s first grant recipient was Miranda Fennewald. Fennewald is a third-grade teacher and high school track coach at Community R-6. She requested a mobile magnetic whiteboard and adjustable standing desk for her classroom, which the Helpful Heifers presented to her on Aug. 21.

“No business could survive without the support of the community,” Barb said. “It’s just always been important to us, from the very beginning, to be able to give back.”

Since it was established, Salty Heifers Co. has been a charity-centered business. One of its oldest programs, Chari-TEES, gives organizations $5 back for every shirt purchased. It also kickstarted the annual Mexico Jeep Thing. This year’s proceeds from the Mexico Jeep Thing allowed Salty Heifers Co. to donate $2,000 to the Missouri Veterans Home – Assistance League, $10,000 to the Central Missouri Veterans Monument Foundation, and $2,000 to Main Street Mexico.

“We’ve always been involved in fundraising and charity work and all different organizations, all three of us,” Barb said. “We were able to do that here, and we just feel that we’re called to do that.”

Members of any of the aforementioned groups and organizations are encouraged to apply for a grant on the Helpful Heifers’ website at www.TheHelpfulHeifers.com. Each application will be reviewed by the Helpful Heifers Board, which is composed of Barb, Jacie, and Swaim as well as Kaitlyn Clithero and Nicole Taylor.

The foundation will not be providing cash donations to approved applicants — rather it will purchase requested items and donate them directly.

“Businesses can buy things wholesale, get them cheaper, and make our money go further than if you just grab a check,” Barb said.

The Helpful Heifers Foundation will continue fundraising through a number of activities, including the third annual Mexico Jeep Thing, which is currently scheduled for June 26, 2027.

Those who want to assist with fundraising or have questions may contact Jones a 573-797-1669, email the organization at TheHelpfulHeifers@gmail.com or stop by the Salty Heifers Co., located at 118 W. Jackson Street in Mexico.
