Van-Far boys undergo defensive struggles in Bowling Green
The Van-Far boys made a statement in the Bowling Green Tournament’s opening round on Tuesday with a 30-28 victory against Louisiana.
The Indians continued to play strong defense following its Palmyra Tournament championship from the previous week but lost 60-39 to Elsberry on Thursday and then was edged 51-47 by Bowling Green for third place on Saturday.
Against Elsberry, Van-Far (10-9) couldn’t stay with its conference foe despite just falling short 50-49 to the Indians earlier in the month at home. Elsberry took a 13-4 lead after the first quarter and then outscored Van-Far 20-12 in the third quarter.
Nikos Connaway led Van-Far with 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Pacey Reading had nine points, five rebounds and two 3-pointers. Elsberry had four score in double figures, including Bryce Irving with 19 points, Kaden Kinsler and Kyle Turnbull with 12 points, and Evan Wilson with 10 points.
Against Bowling Green, Van-Far didn’t have enough to answer Bowling Green’s comeback. After the Indians took a 13-10 lead after the first quarter, Bowling Green led 27-26 at halftime before outscoring Van-Far 14-6 in the third quarter.
Nikos Connaway led with 15 points, six rebounds and four steals, Pacey Reading had 13 points and three 3-pointers, and Cody Smith finished with 10 points. Jace Eskew led Bowling Green with 24 points, and Marcus Starks followed with nine points.
Lady Indians eliminated early at Bowling Green Tournament
Monday was a special night for the Van-Far girls at the Bowling Green Tournament, but they didn’t last much longer.
After Mara Jensen scored her 1,000th career point in a 47-29 loss to Elsberry, Van-Far lost 67-44 to Clopton on Wednesday to be eliminated from the tournament.
The Lady Indians (3-15) trailed Clopton 15-13 after one quarter but fell into a big hole after being outscored 25-12 in the second quarter.
Mara Jensen was the tournament daily leader again with 25 points to go with eight rebounds and four blocks. Carmen Wilburn followed with five points and six assists. Clopton’s Braya Smith was the day’s second leading scorer with 20 points.
