A 17-year-old Vandalia girl died in a head-on collision on Highway 54 on Monday.
The 17-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital at 8:46 p.m. by Dr. S. Thomas, and the driver, a 22-year-old Vandalia man, sustained serious injuries, according to the crash report issued by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The second driver, a 39-year-old Vandalia man, sustained minor injuries.
Neither the 22-year-old driver nor his passenger used a safety device, according to the crash report.
The two-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 6:10 p.m. on Highway 54 east of Pike County Road 458. The 22-year-old driver and his passenger were traveling westbound in a 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser when the driver overcorrected to the left, lost control of the vehicle, and began to skid. The PT Cruiser crossed the centerline, and its passenger side struck the front of the 2015 Cadillac XTS, driven by the 39 year old, who was traveling eastbound.
The 17 year old was transported by Air Evac Lifeteam 146 to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the PT Cruiser was transported by MU-1 helicopter to University Hospital with serious injuries and the driver of the Cadillac was transported by Pike County Ambulance to Pike County Memorial Hospital.
The PT Cruiser was totaled and the Cadillac sustained extensive damage.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol no longer releases the names of people involved in crashes.
