Vandiver Village makes gift for Veterans Monument

Members of the Vandiver Village Board of Trustees have donated $5,000 to the Central Missouri Veterans Monument Foundation to help build the planned Central Missouri Veterans Monument.

The trustees presented a check in support of the project May 10 following a presentation by foundation member Brad Lower at the trustees’ monthly meeting May 6.

“When I saw the sign at the location of the veterans monument, I thought it would be a good idea for the village to get involved,” said Paul Nixon, chair of the Vandiver Village Board of Trustees. “Fortunately, our finances allow us to make this donation to help make this project a success.”

In partnership with the city of Mexico, the Central Missouri Veterans Monument Foundation has developed plans to build a monument honoring mid-Missouri veterans who served in all branches of the military and the Merchant Marine. The monument will be located at the
intersection of Teal Lake Road and Huntingfield Road in Mexico, adjacent to two city parks.

Coetta Dupre, secretary to the Vandiver Village Board of Trustees, said Vandiver Village values being part of the larger Mexico community.

“It was important to the board and our village residents to be able to contribute to the fundraising efforts for the monument,” she said.

The foundation is funding construction of the monument, estimated to cost between $300,000 and $400,000. The city of Mexico will maintain ownership of the land and provide site upkeep.

Foundation Treasurer Raymond Legg said the group is grateful for the generous support the project has received both in monetary donations and in-kind gifts.

“So many individuals and organizations have come forward excited to play a part in bringing this project to reality,” he said.
