Ward wins Wonder Woman; Centralia, Mexico girls compete in tough field

Centralia sophomore Ava Ward thrived in the spotlight Friday in the 115-pound championship match of the Wonder Woman Tournament at Battle High School in Columbia. Ward, who is ranked first nationally at 112 pounds, pinned the reigning tournament and state champion at 115 pounds Angelina Vargas, of Park Hill, who is ranked fourth nationally at 112 pounds. 

Freshman Alexus Johns had the most impressive performance for Mexico, advancing to the second day of competition before losing in the fifth round of wrestlebacks.

Several of the other girls were matched up with state medalists and high-quality wrestlers in stacked fields of 64 per weight class.
