Witches just want to have fun

The Mexico Village Square was crawling with Witches, Warlocks and their familiars this weekend.

Many local businesses kept their doors open late for the Mexico Village Square Associations annual ‘Witches Just want to Have Fun’ promotion. The night began at Jason’s Top Shelf for a little pre-game cocktail fun before heading out on the town.

“The Square has changed a lot over the years, but we’re getting some new businesses,” says Dot Quinlan at The Sparkly Pig.

Those who joined in the halloween fun were given a witch’s hat with their purchase of a ticket which they adorned with specialized pins and decorations from each business they visited.

Participating Businesses included: Kate’s Hallmark Shop, Melody’s Jewelry, The Painted Heifer, The Sparkly Pig, J. Marshall, Coke Plant Antiques, Jacon’s Top Shelf, The Pearl, Serendipity, Salty Heifers Co., Jim Stubblefield Furniture, Color Me Bleu, and sponsoring the photobooth at the Chamber was Cassie and Francis.

“It’s a way to get people into town, up town, shopping small and to see what’s available before Christmas,” says Quinlan.

Mexico had been crawling with witches since 2 p.m. and smack in the middle of the square was John Knipfel, the evening's DJ.

Along with their pins, the witches also collected raffle tickets which were entered in a drawing later that evening. Businesses combined goodies from their stores into five gift baskets which executive director Dana Keller, raffled off at 6 p.m. at the Pearl where all the witches had gathered for the night.

The Pearl, in addition to their festive cocktail menu, hosted a costume contest for any witch who was interested. One by one the witches posed in their costumes at the front of the establishment.

A special gift basket was awarded to the best witch in show, Gail May.
