Teachers bring a lot to the classroom.
 
That may seem like an obvious remark, until you realize just how invested they are in their students. Teachers often buy materials to support their lessons, for instance, or spend their own money on basics like markers and paper.
 
And thanks to COVID-19 and the yo-yo between in class and remote learning it causes, there are even more demands on educators.

If you keep up with local news or follow radio coverage of high school sports, you know Mathew Pilger – or at least you know the sound of his voice.

Pilger serves as news director at KWWR and KXEO radio in Mexico, but he seems to be everywhere. City council meetings? Yep. Bulldogs football games? You know it. Pilger hosts the morning show and provides live coverage of Mexico sports, as well as breaking news.

Thanksgiving baskets bring goodwill

One of Mexico’s long-standing Thanksgiving traditions once again provided much-needed relief last week. And while COVID-19 put a cramp in First Baptist Church’s Thanksgiving Day Hot Meal plans, the church pivoted and delivered.

For over 25 years, the church has served hot Thanksgiving meals to the community, averaging between 400 to 600 annually. This year instead of hot meals, First Baptist provided families in need with everything needed to cook their own Thanksgiving day feasts at home. It was something they felt had to be done, considering the current pandemic.

Filing dates announced for school board candidates

The Mexico School District announced filing dates for positions on the school board.

Filing for the April 6, 2021 general election begins on Dec. 15 of this year and ends on Jan. 19 of 2021 at 5 pm. School board terms are for three years and there are two spots open.

Qualified candidates will be placed on the ballot in the order of filing.

Those interested in getting their names on the ballot may enter information at the superintendent's office during regular business hours. The office is located at 2101 Lakeview Road in Mexico.

Mexico City Council backs health department mask advisory

An item not on the Mexico City Council agenda stirred more debate than the scheduled points last Monday night.

Mayor Ayanna Shivers introduced the opportunity for the council to make a statement in support of the Audrain County Health Department’s mask advisory, issued on Nov. 12. The advisory urges, but falls short of mandating, county residents to wear face coverings while in public.
The health department asked communities and organizations to pass such a resolution.

Mexico woman creates a line of natural skin care products

Red dye and wrestling led to Emily Stuart selling soaps, lotions and other natural products at The Gift Bar in Mexico.

MLE Natural Wellness is a small batch operation, and Stuart plans to keep it that way. She is busy enough in the radiology department at SSM St. Mary’s Hospital in Mexico. Still, Stuart crafts a diverse line that includes fragrances, scrubs, pain relief, lip balms – “and I’ve dabbled in candles,” she said.

Aside from what she makes for family and friends, Stuart produces just enough to stock a shelf at the eclectic shop on downtown’s square.

There’s an element of confusion sown by the pandemic. Decisions on whether to shut down an event or not are often forced to be made at the last minute as conditions change.

And so for weeks Janet Eckler wondered, even as people answered in the affirmative, “are we really going to have a Christmas market?”

No, our interest doesn’t suddenly shift away from food to Black Friday or Small Business Saturday deals. When it comes to dining, it seems we prefer leftovers to the big meal itself.
