Village Square Association (VSA) of Mexico will host A Mid Summer Fest Thursday, July 22, through Saturday, July 24. Businesses will stay open until 7 p.m. Thursday. There will be sidewalk sales and a drawing for a gift basket full of merchandise from participating businesses.
Kicking off the event will be a performance from the Liberty Jazz Band at 5:30 p.m. When the band breaks at 6:30, there will be a special Mexico Ledger-inspired Newsies dance by Janet’s Dance Studio. As the dance goes on, Ledger paper boys and girls will be handing out complimentary editions of The Ledger. And inside will be limited-edition event coupons. Coupons will only be available in the papers handed out July 22. A limited number may be available at businesses.
“The Ledger is excited to be a part of A Mid Summer Fest,” said Ledger General Manager Nathan Lilley.
The idea of handing out papers came about at a VSA meeting held earlier in the year. Lilley volunteered to hand out papers — and to dress up as a paperboy if need be — for the event. One thing led to another and Janet’s Dance Studio signed on for a Newsies dance to complement festivities. And after the dance, Liberty Jazz Band returns to play from 7-8 p.m.
And what kind of coupons are being offered?
Some businesses are offering up to 30 percent off merchandise, making for some serious savings.
“We really want people to come out and spend the evening with us,” said April Thomas, owner of the Sparkly Pig and VSA president. “We have an all-star cast of businesses taking part, making this a truly special event.”
A Lucille Ball cutout will also be on the square for photo opps. Ball’s likeness is featured in Mexico’s “I Love Local” campaign, which is inspired by the classic “I Love Lucy” television show.
