A winter storm is projected to bring bitterly cold air, snow and strong winds to the Audrain County area starting on Thursday, Dec. 22. The snow is expected to be done by Thursday night, however the extremely cold air and the wind is projected to last into Friday and Saturday.

"We have started planning and working with the Red Cross," said Audrain County Emergency Management director Carl Donaldson. "I toured the Mexico Area Family YMCA and the Mexico Middle School. These buildings gives access to over 2,000 people for emergency shelter and warming centers if electrical grid failure happens. The City of Mexico Public Works Department had their employees pretreat the parking lots incase either building is needed for SEMA shelter. It is going to be cold, deep cold. Stay off the roads and keep an eye on the Audrain County Emergency Management Facebook page for alerts."

The Audrain Ambulance District is advising residents to check your heat sources and make sure your neighbors are ok. Make sure you are set for the possibilities of no travel.

According to the latest forecast the snow will not start until Thursday morning starting from 4am to 8am. The snow will then continue into the early afternoon, and will come to an end around 3-6pm. Snow may be moderate to heavy at times on Thursday. Accumulations are predicted to be anywhere from 2-4" of snow.

Missouri American Water is reminding customers of tips to prepare their homes for below freezing temperatures. When temperatures stay below freezing leave doors open on cabinets and vanities to expose pipes to warmer air. Keep water moving through pipes by allowing a small trickle of water to run. And if it snows, allow the snow to cover your water meter. Snow acts as insulation. Missouri American Water also advises if your pipes freeze to shut off the water immediately. Thaw pipes with warm air, not direct heat. Avoid leaving space heaters unattended and avoid the use of kerosene heaters or open flames. And turn the water back on slowly once pipes have thawed, and check for cracks and leaks. For more information on cold weather tips, visit missouriamwater.com.
