One of the bigger events in Mexico and Audrain County is back:
It’s youth fair time.
The 2022 Audrain County Youth Fair is set to kick off officially 3 p.m. Thursday with FFA Chapter Check In at the Exhibit Hall and will go through Tuesday, July 19, closing with Opening Ceremonies followed by Livestock/Ham/Bacon sale (livestock complex).
With weather and temperatures expected to be normal and hopefully, not-much rain in the forecast, this year could be another special one.
“I think we are ready go: We had some hiccups this year, but I think we stepped up and overcame those,” Brad Hagan, Youth Fair board member and a 4-H foundation representative, said. “It’s still a learning process for some.”
Hagan stepped back into a fair board role after about a half-dozen years away while being a foundation member and he noted this year has been a mishmash of newer persons being actively involved with the process combined with some newer machinations.
“Not a lot of back history to pull from and they are doing things a lot different than we have in the past and it’s a lot better,” Hagan said. “The board the last few years have done a really good job to lay a foundation for the new members. It’s nice to see new blood on these new boards and see these new ideas.
“We have had some of our FFA advisors step up. It’s nothing negative. It’s a learning curve for a lot of folks. Everyone has been really flexible, and it will all come together – it always does.”
Hagan is back on board as his turn as a representative as a foundation member rolled in his direction. He has been involved with the fair for almost 20 years.
A lot of volunteers have stepped up to create good work force.
“It’s not just 4-H and foundation members, it’s the whole community,” he said. “It amazes me the support from our local community and surrounding communities that come out and support the 4-H program.
“Even when the economy is in a slump, the kids do really well with sales. It’s a testament to local businesses and individuals on how important 4-H is.”
