Mexico native Ellen Withers gets a few chances each year to come back home but this time was special.
Withers held a meet, greet, and book signing for her first published fiction mystery novel that is based in Mexico and uses real historic structures for the setting. The event took place on Wednesday, June 7, at The Oaks.
Excited locals filled The Oaks foyer chatting among themselves as they waited their turn to have a conversation with the author. Withers, who grew up in Mexico but now lives in Conway, AR, told the Ledger she was having fun.
“Everybody has been excited about it and I hope this will be a shot in the arm for Mexico too,” Withers said. “I want to let other people find out about how exciting it is to be here and the beautiful homes that are here and the history that is here.”
Withers had a lot of catching up to do as each person who came to see her had a story to share. One visitor that stood out to Withers was her sixth-grade teacher, Miss Gorman, now Mrs. Hacker.
“She tried to teach me good grammar,” Withers said while laughing.
Another special visit involved the widow of one of the most influential teachers Withers had, Mr. Douglas.
“Mr. Douglas was a great, great teacher,” Withers said. “It’s good to have two representatives from my high school and junior high education that love words and writing.”
Part of the meet and greet also involved entering a contest. Withers plans on writing a series of books and is looking for names for her characters. Those interested entered their names to be used in one of her upcoming books.
“I just thought that would be fun,” Withers said. “I would love to have my name in somebody’s book. I thought that would be fun to offer an opportunity to someone to have their name in a book.”
Withers got asked a lot of questions but what was asked the most?
“When is the next book coming out?” Withers said.
Withers is currently working on the second book in a three-part series that will be released almost a year from now.
