BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Mexico bats come around late, loses 6-4 at Hannibal

Posted

By the time the Bulldogs were crossing the plate on Thursday, Hannibal had the advantage.

Mexico lost 6-4 at its North Central Missouri Conference foe to drop back-to-back conference games. The Bulldogs trailed 5-0 until scoring four runs in the final two innings.

Up to that point, Mexico (3-2, 2-2 NCMC) had two baserunners via singles by Sam Ryan and Tyler Thoenen. Those two hitters contributed to a three-run sixth inning as Ryan picked up his second hit and Thoenen recorded an RBI through a sacrifice fly.

Landyn Kleinsorge kept the inning going with a two-RBI single before Hannibal starter Evan Harsell ended his final inning with his fifth strikeout.

Ryan’s third hit made it 6-4 in the seventh inning with the Bulldogs still threatening with two runners on base. Mexico couldn’t cash in later with the bases loaded to end the game.

Matt McCurdy went 2-for-3 with a double for Mexico, and Colton Dryden went 3-for-4 for Hannibal (3-6, 2-0 NCMC) including the game-winning home run in the fifth inning.

Austin Maxwell allowed nine hits, five earned runs and three walks while striking out five in 5⅔ innings on the mound for Mexico.

Mexico's junior varsity won 7-0 in four innings. Cooper Bledsoe finished 2-for-2 with two RBI, and the Bulldogs had one RBI each from Tyson Carr, Chance McCarty, Ashton Belcher and Wyatt Troesser. Carr pitched three innings while striking out three and allowing one hit and one walk.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to play in a quad at Eugene today before playing Highland (2-2) on Wednesday at Busch Stadium after the Cardinals’ 12:15 p.m. game with the Atlanta Braves.

North Callaway adds on early in 16-1 win vs Van-Far

North Callaway didn’t need long to win on Wednesday.

In a game that lasted for a little more than an hour, the Thunderbirds defeated Eastern Missouri Conference foe Van-Far 16-1 in three innings, scoring 12 runs in the first inning.

Carter Moore struck out seven in three innings while allowing three walks, two hits, and one earned run.

North Callaway (2-2, 1-0 EMO) tallied four extra base hits, including a bases-clearing triple in the first inning and a double by Matthew Weber that helped him drive in three runs. Braydn O’Neal’s lone hit was a double as he scored three runs and drew two walks, and Keaton Bell also had a double and two RBI.

Three Van-Far (0-3, 0-1 EMO) errors led to 10 unearned runs charged to Jacob Radmacher, who surrendered six hits in two innings.

Nikos Connaway and Gibson Condie each picked singles for the Indians.

North Callaway is scheduled to play at 5 p.m. Tuesday at reigning conference champion Bowling Green (2-2, 1-1 EMO) while Van-Far played at conference foe Wellsville-Middletown (2-1, 2-0 EMO) on Friday and is scheduled to host Community (3-1) at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Missouri Military Academy rolls with big inning to 14-1 win vs Madison

It was over early on Thursday.

Missouri Military Academy defeated Madison 14-1 in five innings at home thanks to a nine-run third inning, walking five times and being hit by two pitches in the inning to precede an 11-1 lead.

In that third inning, 14 Colonels came to the plate as Luke Wolf, Hunter Manderson and Anthony Melick picked up RBI hits after the score had already been pushed to 6-1 on a steal of home by Avin Hernandez.

Bryce Slayton went 2-for-2 with four runs scored, two RBI and a double, Melick finished 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI, and Manderson had one official at-bat as he walked twice but scored three times and drove in two runs.

William Delaplane started for MMA (2-2) against Madison (0-4) and pitched 4⅓ innings while striking out eight and allowing three hits, one run and no walks.

MMA had Tuscumbia scheduled (0-2) for a home game Friday and the MMA Invitational Baseball Classic with Van-Far (0-3) and Paris (1-1) for today. The Colonels play Van-Far at 10 a.m., Paris faces Van-Far at noon, and MMA plays Paris at 2 p.m.

Centralia loses tight 4-3 game at Clark County

Centralia had the hits to match last week’s performance against Fayette but not the runs.

The Panthers defeated Fayette 17-6 on March 24 at home thanks to 10 hits and followed that performance with 12 hits on Monday at Clarence Cannon Conference foe Clark County. Centralia lost to the Indians 4-3 after allowing a run in each of the final two innings.

After falling behind 2-1 after the third inning, Centralia (1-3, 0-1 CCC) answered back in the fifth inning with RBI singles from Jack Romine and Micah Danielson, making it 3-2.

Tuckyr Pollock was brought in to relieve Ethan Adams — who struck out six and allowed six hits, three walks and one earned run in five innings — in the sixth inning after Clark County (4-1, 1-0 CCC) loaded the bases with nobody out. A run crossed on a fielder’s choice but the score stayed tied at 3.

Like the sixth inning, Clark County led off the seventh inning with a double and couldn’t score the runner until there were two outs. The winning run scored on an infield error for the walk-off victory.

Centralia had run-scoring threats in the third and fifth innings, when Romine doubled home a run in the third and then hit a RBI single with nobody out in the fifth. Danielson was able to come through a little later before the Panthers ran themselves out of the inning.

Romine was 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Matt Robinson, Michael Marcellus and Anthony Ford each picked up two hits.

Centralia was scheduled to participate in the Cairo Baseball Tournament today.
