North Callaway looking to subtract some strokes before districts

North Callaway has liked how each golfer has progressed this season.

Its returning seniors Tyler Huddleston and Johnny Brown, and newcomers Anthony Russell, Vincent Houchins and Clayton Moore have all made improvements, head coach Jason Smith said, as the Thunderbirds go for team state qualification at districts on May 6 at Norwoods Golf Club in Hannibal.

“Our season has been successful in spite of the weather — lots of really cold, wet and windy days on the golf course,” Smith said. “We need to focus on the short game and course management. All the players on the team could shave a couple strokes off rounds by improving in those areas.”

Smith said North Callaway’s best performances have been recently, adding to his belief it could send a team to state. The Thunderbirds won the small schools division on April 15 at the Elsberry tournament and then won the Callaway Cup three days later against Fulton, New Bloomfield and South Callaway.
