The Paris seniors want to end their careers strong but wanted to start strong Friday night.
The Coyotes won on Senior Night 54-14 against district foe Schuyler County (3-5) after leading 38-0 after the first quarter and scoring all of their points in the first half.
Head coach Cody Carney said it ended up being a balanced night in yardage for passing and rushing, but it mattered to Paris (5-2) how it started.
“We got the ball first, and we ran a hook and ladder play on them,” Carney said. “We got them on that and scored a touchdown on the first play. We’ve struggled the last four or five weeks in getting started in the game and trying to get our offense going, so we started the game with a little bit of fun and kickstarted us.”
The seniors were big contributors as Logan Mitchell and Sawyer Clements scored three and two touchdowns, respectively. Mitchell connected with Clements for 56-yards on that hook and ladder touchdown. Senior lineman Kaden Lehenbauer caught a touchdown, and another senior lineman Kaden Graupman ran for a two-point conversion.
The all-state wide receiver Mitchell and running back Clements have had good seasons for Paris. Recently, Mitchell had four touchdowns in two weeks going into Friday and had 106 receiving yards two weeks ago while Clements had at least 70 rushing yards the prior two weeks.
“Logan had a great year last year, and Sawyer has had to deal with injury issues,” Carney said. “Sawyer’s our main running back, and Logan’s our main receiver. They’ve been doing a fantastic job of making sure the team is working hard and getting better week in, week out.”
Bryce Wade was a standout senior on defense with three sacks. Carney said the defensive line recovered three fumbles — Graupman, Marshall DeOrnellas and senior Landon Kendrick — in the first half to help pad the early lead, and Schuyler County finished with 53 total yards after having -33 yards in the first half.
“They had bad snaps, and our guys were able to jump on them,” Carney said.
Paris wants a good showing in its regular season finale at 7 p.m. Friday at Lincoln (1-7) before rematches with district opponents like North Shelby and Knox County that both beat the Coyotes earlier this year.
“It’s good to see them not give up,” Carney said. “They’re working towards trying to beat those guys.”
