Big second quarter allows Thunderbirds to pull away from Van-Far

Van-Far fell to the North Callaway Thunderbirds 45-0 on Friday in its first home game of the season.

Head coach John Kliewer entered his second season with hopes to improve after a 1-9 record in his first year with Van-Far. Kliewer’s preparation has been stunted early, with his team’s first two games canceled due to complications related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Indians (0-2) fell 8-6 to Mark Twain in the season opener.

Van-Far kept it close early in the game, finishing the first quarter down 7-0. The Thunderbirds (2-1) took a commanding lead in the second, scoring 24 points to bring the halftime score to 31-0.

Turnovers plagued Van-Far after the first — quarterback Tony Garland threw two interceptions and Van-Far fumbled twice as well.

“That second quarter, if it’s not there, it was a pretty solid football game,” Kliewer said.

North Callaway added a score in each of the last two quarters, keeping Van-Far off of the scoreboard.

Kliewer was impressed with the play of junior Bryson Lay, who plays halfback and defensive back. Lay rushed for 33 yards on 12 carries and added an interception.

“He made some huge tackles out in space to help us keep good field position and force North Callaway into some bad spots on third and fourth down,” Kliewer said.

Sophomore running back and linebacker Brandon Harvey was injured and exited the game.

“They don’t know where that’s at right now,” Kliewer said regarding the injury.

Next week, Van-Far faces Louisiana (0-4) — the only team it beat last season — in search of its first win of the season. The road game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
