Bonnie Lou (Spurling) Cox, 79, of Martinsburg, passed away on Monday, Sept. 28, 2020, at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia.

Bonnie was born July 21, 1941 in Thompson, the daughter of the late Helen Bramble and Shannon Spurling. She graduated from Mexico High School in 1959 and went on to work at First National Bank.

On July 15, 1962, at the Kentucky Road Christian Church in Mexico, she married Emory Meador Cox. He preceded her in death last year.

Bonnie was an exceptional wife and mother. She devoted her life to raising her children on the farm that she and Emory built together. Our Mom adored her grandchildren and they brought her great joy. She loved music and the radio was always on. She cared deeply for her family, friends, and neighbors, and she was loved throughout the community. You could always find her willing to share a helping hand at church and school events. Bonnie was an avid gardener and spent many hours canning jams, preserves, and vegetables. She was a skilled baker and was known for her pies. She loved to sew and was also a skilled quilter.

Bonnie was a longtime member of the Martinsburg Community Church and had served on the church board several times. Our Mom loved the church and would help in any way possible. She was an active member of the Sunshine Jolly Neighbors in Benton City and the Circle of Friends Club of Martinsburg. She volunteered as a representative for the Farm Service Agency County Committee.

Bonnie is survived by her three children: James Emory (Lisa) Cox of Mexico, Elise Kay Cox of Mexico, and Chad William (Tammy) Cox of Troy; five grandchildren, Callie and Tucker Cox, Kamille Reynolds, and Kyler and Ashlyn Cox; two brothers, Russell (Tammy) Spurling of Hannibal, and Jim (Jeanne) Spurling of Annapolis, Maryland; and two sisters-in-law; Nan Cox of Mexico and Jane (Don) Shire of Mexico.

Due to current circumstances, there will be a public drive-through visitation on Sunday, Oct. 18, from 1-3p.m. at the Martinsburg Community Church in Martinsburg. A private burial and memorial service will immediately follow at the Benton City Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Martinsburg Community Church. They may be sent in care of Arnold Funeral Home, 425. S. Jefferson, Mexico, MO 65265.
