Mexico was down but not out on Monday at home. The Bulldogs fell behind 5-0 to Class 5 No. 2 Helias Catholic but responded with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. At game's end, Mexico lost 5-4 after compiling four hits but sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth inning as the Bulldogs took advantage of two Helias infield errors and scratched a few across on a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation.

Matt McCurdy and Austin Maxwell each had sacrifice flies and Andrew Runge had an RBI single. Maxwell struck out seven in four innings while allowing three earned runs on five hits, and Sam Ryan allowed an unearned run on three hits allowed in three innings.

“I believe if we play great competition, we’ll play great and eventually we’ll become great,” head coach Daniel McCarty said. “I take this as a win tonight. We came out and battled, we didn’t give up and we competed every inning.”

Mexico (8-11) plays at Class 4 No. 9 Blair Oaks (13-12) at 5 p.m. Thursday.
