Bulldogs can’t overcome second quarter woes

For Mexico, Saturday’s matchup with South Boone County at the Gary Filbert Classic came down to a frustrating word: if.

“If our shots fell it would have been tight,” observed Jordyn Thurman. “But ours weren’t falling and theirs were.”

The rims were unkind to Mexico Saturday evening at the Gary Filbert Classic in the MHS Sports Complex. visitors’ 13 points in the first quarter.

But early on, Mya Miller and the Bulldogs ran evenly with South Boone. Miller opened the scoring with an underhand lay up and added 6 more before the first buzzer. Her final bucket was a coast to coast romp. Thurman sank one of two from the line and Alexis Willer made a strong move into the paint for two.

At the end of one it was a narrow 13-11 game in favor of the Eagles.

The next if in the equation then fell like a block of lead. Nothing went right for the Bulldogs. Meanwhile South Boone rolled.

After Miller banked one off the glass to keep Mexico within striking distance, 15-13, with just over five minutes to go in the half, the Eagles took wing. Prince scored on a quick turn inside and then stepped outside the arc and sank a three.

This started a 16-0 run.

“We would miss a shot and we would dwell on it,” Miller said. “Coming from our Hannibal win to this, we weren’t mentally ready.”

At Hannibal everything fell Mexico’s way. In the second quarter against South Boone, however, shots failed to hit their mark.

“That was a big key,” said head coach Ed Costley. “We didn’t hit open looks early.”

The Eagles outscored Mexico 22-8 in the second quarter, and that caused all the damage necessary. Miller pointed out that the team solved South Boone’s press and stepped up their game after the halftime break.

Running evenly with the visitors at that point proved too late.

Miller was strong all night, hitting for 24 points. No other Bulldog made it into double digits, but Riley Thurman finished with 9 on the night.

Behind Thurman, Willer struck for 6, Elizabeth Joiner sank a late three and Jordyn Thurman an early free throw.

“This was a learning opportunity,” Costley said. “It’s going to make us better.”
