Corn-filled bags landed on the sloped board with a familiar thud. Onlookers, who sat around ice-cold buckets of beer, chowed down on their pork steak dinners and sized up their opponents.
The competition at the Central Missouri Veterans Monument Foundation inaugural cornhole tournament was fiercely spirited and friendly all the while. Everyone there knew they were in that VFW hall for the same reason – to support veterans.
Just a couple hours into the all-day event, the foundation had 36 players signed up for the tournament. In the VFW main dining room was a raffle, bake sale, T-shirt sale and dine in or carry out lunch and dinner. On the menu were pork steaks served with potato salad and beans and walking tacos.
The evening concluded with live music by Kelly Stanford and the drawing for the 50/50 raffle as well as the Henry Golden Boy rifle.
As progress on the monument’s iminent construction continues to pick up pace, the foundation will be hosting even more fundraisers and focusing on outreach.
