People are still picking up the pieces after a devastating deadly apartment fire in the 1200 block of West Breckenridge Drive on Friday, Dec. 23. The fire claimed the life of Mexico resident, 60-year-old Ruth Ann Stuart and completely destroyed nine of the eleven apartments and the office. Mexico Public Safety Department says that fifteen people were displaced.
"The Red Cross has talked to about six people requesting aid. There are still needs. Not all have been relocated and they are needing to find long-term places to live," said John Mathews, American Red Cross Disaster Specialist. "They lost almost everything. Some of the biggest things in need are clothing, shoes, and winter coats and financial aid," said Mathews.
Local resident Angie Sparks has also been helping in getting donated items to the displaced residents. "It has been really nice with the community support for these residents. My car has been loaded with donations and I am still picking up items. They need household items, like kitchen utensils and small appliances. Anyone wanting to donate can call me at 573-253-6453," said Sparks.
Donations to the American Red Cross can be made by calling 1-800-Red Cross or at Redcross.org.
The Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office is assisting Mexico Public Safety with the investigation into the apartment fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
