Community R-6 holds athletic banquet

The Community R-VI School District held its high school athletic banquet on Friday, May 3 in the gymnasium. The event was to recognize athletes in the RVI school district for their participation in athletics throughout the school year. Athletes, coaches, and families were treated to a ribeye steak dinner, catered by The Carlson House. The night kicked off with the Community R6 Booster Club Co-President Vicky Duenke recognizing Coach and Athletic Director Trenton Pummill and R6 Superintendent Nick Larson for their support of the programs. Both are leaving the district after this school year.

Three awards are selected from the entire athletic roster. The first that was given during the banquet was the Sandra Schutte award. This honor is given to an athlete who participates in at least one sport, has a strong skill set, and excels both academically and athletically. The award winners were seniors Alyssa Beamer and Aaron Carter.

The George M. Dameron award is given to a multi-sport athlete who has outstanding citizenship. This year’s winners were seniors Kylie Brooks and Mason Rohan. The final schoolwide award is the Lady Trojan and Mr. Trojan award. This honor is given to a multi-sport athlete who is a true leader in the school, who is a difference maker, and a standout. This year’s Lady Trojan was senior Brooklynn Glasgow. The Mr. Trojan award went to senior Mason Carroll.

The recognition and individual awards included:

Cross Country:
- Goal Getter award, Rhett Curtis, freshman
- Team Leader award, Grace McCoskey, freshman

- Momentum award, Nicholas Henke, freshman
- Assistant Coach award, Evelyn Scott, freshman
Softball: Coach Kendra Murphy recognized all ten of the
members of the team for receiving their letters in the sport. She also recognized the team for receiving Academic All-State honors. For this honor, all members of the team must have a GPA of 3.3 or above.

She then recognized individuals for receiving individual academic honors. For this award, each athlete needed a 3.7 GPA or above. Those included: Brooklynn Glasgow, Rylee Rafferty, Jocelyn Curtis, and Chloe Johnson.
Individual awards were:
- Offensive Player of the Year: Paige Painter, senior; Painter had 43 hits of 110 at bats and 47 RBIs to secure this award.
- Defensive Player of the Year: Alyssa Beamer, senior; Beamer at a 92 field ing percentage and Murphy highlighted several of her key catches including a diving catch at New Franklin and a catch at Cairo, which saved the game for the Lady Trojans.
- Most Valuable Player: Brooklynn Glasgow, senior

- Most Improved Player: Chloe Johnson, sophomore

- Leadership award: Taylor Johnson, senior
Girls’ Basketball: Head Coach Bob Curtis started by recognizing players who received post-season honors. Those included Central Activities Conference, seniors Brooklynn Glasgow and Kylie Brooks, honorable mention, sophomore Peyton Beamer; All-District, seniors Brooklynn Glasgow and Kylie Brooks.
Individual awards were:
- NFHS awards, which are given for citizenship and positivity to a first or second year player. The winners were freshman, Lydia Hoyt and sophomore, Adriana Woodson.

- Junior Varsity Player of the Year: Kat Meyer, sophomore

- Hustle award: Chloe Johnson, sophomore

- Most Improved: Aaliyah Welch, junior

- Highest Free-Throw Percentage: the athlete must take at least 50 free throws in a season. The winner was senior Brooklynn Glasgow who hit 70 free throws out of 102 attempts.

- Queen of the Boards: Kylie Brooks, senior, who averaged 12.8 rebounds
per game
- Highest Three-Point Percentage: Peyton Beamer, sophomore with 29%.

- Most Coachable: Rylee Rafferty, junior

- Winstinct Award: Jocelyn Curtis, sophomore

- Defensive Player of the Year: Brooklynn Glasgow,
senior and Alyssa Beamer, senior
- Offensive Player of the Year: Kylie Brooks, senior
Boys’ Basketball Head Coach Kody Asquith recognized members of the team who received post-season honors. Those included: Mason Carroll, senior, all-conference and all-district team honors.

Individual Awards:
- Defensive Player of the Year: Caden Thomas, freshman
- Offensive Player of the Year: Mason Carroll,
senior, with 1,252 points throughout his career
- The Sixth-Man award: Cooper Rohan, freshman
- Hustle award: Aaron Carter, senior

- Leader of the Year: Mason Rohan, senior

- Team MVP: Mason Carroll, senior
- Most Improved award: Clayton Jennings, junior

- Team Leader 3s: Mason Carroll, senior

Cheerleading
Head Coach Charlea Scafer began by recognizing her captains for the year who were Olivia Schafer and Clara Stone, both seniors.
Individual Awards:
- Rookie of the Year: Peyton Schafer
- Best Team Player: Brooke Painter
- Best Jumps: Clara Stone
- MVP: Chloe Eckler
Track and Field Head Coach Trenton Pummill highlighted the season, which is approaching the sectional meet. So far in the season, the team set 170 personal records, which were set and broken numerous times. This included the boys and girls 4x800m relay teams who consistently broke and set the school records. The team earned 65 medals in events and earned 577 points for the girls and 437 points for the boys, considerably more than previous years. Three school records were set, which included: the two-mile run, set by freshman Grace McCoskey; the Girls 4x800m relay team with three different records and the final record of 11:57, Alyssa Beamer, Peyton Schafer, Lydia Hoyt, and Kat Meyer; the boys 4x800m relay team with a final record of 10:39, Mason Rohan, Brett Beamer, Houston Hogan, and Nicholas Henke.

Those earning Central Activities Conferencehonors are: 800m, senior Alyssa Beamer; 100m hur dles, sophomore Adriana Woodson; girls 4x400m relay, senior Alyssa Beamer, sophomores Peyton Schafer and Kat Meyer, and freshman Lydia Hoyt; girls 4x800m relay team; javelin, sophomore Chloe Johnson; 300m hurdles, freshman Caden Thomas; boys 4x100m relay team, sophomore Lane Carter, freshman Caden Thomas, and seniors, Mason Carroll and Aaron Carter.
Individual Awards:
- Girls’ Running MVP: Alyssa Beamer, senior
- Field MVP: Chloe Johnson, sophomore
- Boys’ Running MVP: Lane Carter, freshman

- Field MVP: Rhett Curtis, freshman

- Top Newcomer: Lydia Hoyt and Caden Thomas, freshmen
- Team Leader Award: Kat Meyer, sophomore
Baseball Head Coach Joel Krato highlighted the team’s success after last year’s athletic banquet when they made it to the state tournament and proceeded to discuss how this season was currently going as it approached post-season play. Individual Awards:
- Best Hitter: Brandt Cope, senior

- Cy Young award: Mason Rohan, senior- Gold Glove award: Lane Carter, sophomore
- Wade Hester award: This is given to a player or players whose conduct and attitude, Krato admires. This year there were three winners Clayton Jennings, junior, Eli Johnson, senior, and Mason Carroll, senior.
