The Van-Far boys are back on a winning stretch after three tough losses.
The Indians defeated Class 1 No. 5 Higbee 73-51 on Friday during the Ramey Basketball Mid-Missouri Invitational in Harrisburg. Nikos Connaway and Cody Smith each posted 20-point performances, scoring 27 and 20 points, respectively.
After narrow losses to conference opponents Bowling Green and Montgomery County, Van-Far (12-10) defeated another conference foe Mark Twain 62-49 prior Saturday’s state-ranked challenge. The Indians took control early, leading 18-10 after the first quarter and then 40-26 at halftime.
The Indians torched the nets, shooting 42 percent from the field and 34 percent from beyond the arc. By the final buzzer, they dropped 13 3-pointers on the Tigers (18-4), led by four each from Connaway and Smith and three by Pacey Reading.
Connaway stuffed the stat sheet with 12 rebounds, eight assists and five steals to earn the game's MVP award. Reading finished with nine points, and eight Indians total scored in the game.
On Thursday at Eastern Missouri Conference foe Mark Twain, Connaway led Van-Far (3-4 EMO) again with 29 points, nine rebounds and two 3-pointers. Cody Smith followed with 16 points, four assists and three 3-pointers, and Carter Jennings had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Van-Far played at Missouri Military Academy on Monday, winning 80-46, prior to its homecoming game Tuesday against conference opponent Wellsville-Middletown and home contest on Jan. 13 against conference foe Wright City (3-12, 1-4 EMO).
The Lady Indians defeated Mark Twain 54-42 on Thursday prior to losing 54-23 to Higbee on Friday in Harrisburg. Van-Far (4-17, 1-6 EMO) faced Eastern Missouri Conference foe Wellsville-Middletown on Tuesday at home for homecoming, hosts Columbia Independent at 6 p.m. today and then conference opponent Wright City (8-12, 1-5 EMO) at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 13 at home.
