Council supports MexMo app for another year

The Mexico City Council approved two expenditures last week at the recommendation of the city’s Tourism Board.

The council voted unanimously at the regular meeting on May 22, to approve a $1,000 payment to the Audrain County 4-H Club for advertising expenses related to this year’s county fair and a $5,000 payment to the Mexico Chamber of Commerce for another year of the Mighty MexMo app for smart devices.

Dana Keller, executive director of the chamber, answered questions for the council at the meeting about the app and its usage. Keller told the council the app has about 1,500 subscribers. Keller said the app is great for out-of-towners coming in for graduation or the many events at the Missouri Military Academy (MMA).

“We’ve gotten a lot of reports back from MMA cadets and cadets’ families about how useful it is,” Keller said. “We also see a lot of traffic on it in regards to Miss Missouri.”

Keller said new features have been added to the app that will allow the chamber to post icons for special events.

“Somebody could open the app and go directly and get all the content and anything related to that,” Keller said.

The app has gotten a lot of traffic and the local restaurants seem to be benefiting the most from the app.

“People are hungry,” Keller said. “All of the top indicators are that people are going to look at restaurants for hours and those sorts of things.”

Keller said the app could be utilized even more by organizations like Mexico Public Schools and MMA.

“As long as the organization itself helps promote that it’s available people will download the app,” Keller said. “It’s a convenience thing. Why would you mess with schedules and all of those sorts of things when you can just pop it up on your phone easily.”
