Some members of the Mexico City Council all calling for a summit of officials to figure out what to do about the perceived growing problem of homelessness.

Council Member Chris Williams during council remarks asked if the city could have a work session and invite the Audrain County Shelter Resource Coalition, the Arthur Center, the Audrain County Sheriff’s Department, the Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD), and any other agency to help find an answer.

“The problem is just getting worse,” Williams said. “Now Break Time is a total mess. How long before they try to go into someone’s house, the wrong house, and someone shoots them?”

Williams said he hears the complaints at his job and something needs to be done.

“I feel like we need to get everybody together and hash out something,” Williams said. “We need to figure out something to help these people or something. It doesn’t seem to be getting any better.”

Williams said he listens to a scanner at night and can hear the calls MPSD has to answer. He said they’re doing their best job but it may not be enough.

“I think we need some more help,” Williams said. “We need to get everybody on the same page.”

Council Member Steve Haag said it’s affecting local businesses like Break Time.

“How long is Break Time going to stay open if they keep having to deal with it?” Haag asked. “That’s a homegrown Missouri Business. I know it’s a tough thing to deal with. We need to do something.
