Lady Trojans' roller coaster of emotions ends in 44-43 win against Pilot Grove
The crowd was already charged up Friday night for Community R-6’s homecoming.
The Lady Trojans and their fans experience more emotions in the closing seconds of a 44-43 Central Activities Conference win against Pilot Grove (17-5, 4-2 CAC). Sarah Angel hit one of two free throws for the winning point after Aaliyah Welch tied the game with a 3-pointer seconds prior.
Head coach Bob Curtis said after Community (18-4, 5-1 CAC) battled back from down 23-22 at halftime and then 31-30 to start the fourth quarter, it was down three points in the final point while being on the hook to inbound the ball from the baseline. He acknowledged he made an error, but the Lady Trojans picked him up.
“I called time just as Alyssa (Beamer) kicked it out to Sarah and she let it fly,” Curtis said. “The official waved off the game tying 3 with about 30 seconds to play. We then drew up an out-of-bounds play and Aaliyah Welch hit a 3 to tie it and bail me out.”
From there, Curtis entrusted the game to his senior point guard Angel, who made the game-winning free throw with three seconds left to play.
Welch led the Lady Trojans with nine points and six rebounds, Kayla Jett had nine points, Beamer followed with eight points, and Olivia Kuda finished with six points.
Community (18-4, 5-1 CAC) hosted conference foe Sturgeon on Tuesday night before traveling to conference opponent Glasgow at 6 p.m. Friday.
Trojans unselfish in 75-44 victory vs Pilot Grove

“I’m really proud of my guys and the way they shared the ball tonight,” head coach Tad Shotten said. “That is what really stood out to me as we had a lot of good passes. We really set each other up nicely and am just proud of the unselfish play.”
Gavin Allen benefitted by scoring 35 points against Pilot Grove (9-13, 1-5 CAC), Eli Johnson followed with 13 points, Mason Carroll had 12 points and Brant Cope finished with eight points.
Community (12-11, 4-3 CAC) hosted conference foe Sturgeon on Tuesday night before traveling to another CAC team in Glasgow (15-6, 4-2 CAC) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
